Overview

Motion Stop Factory is a photography business that focuses on capturing the eye-catching movement in physical, dance and acrobatic performances. I’ve always found it mind-boggling how the amazing individuals that put on these acts overcome the fears and self belief anxieties in their minds to condition their bodies to pull-off dazzling displays of flexibility, strength, creativity and grace.

This is even more remarkable when you consider how uncomfortable the relationship between mind and body can be as most of us will struggle not only in accepting how we are made but also with the seemingly little control we have over our imperfections.

Many talented photographers have created truly iconic images of ballet, aerial acts, acrobats and contemporary dance. The spectrum of physical performance is wide and is not only limited to what these imaging wizards have shown. My challenge is to offer pictures of styles that don’t have as much mainstream coverage in the Public Eye.

Pole Dance features a lot on this site. It is an interesting subject because of the technical, aesthetical and social perception aspects that come with it. For this reason, I have made it a long term assignment. I was first introduced to it in early 2007 while experimenting and researching where I could exercise some creativity. Looking back, I would have probably steered clear because of its’ somewhat taboo nature. However, the model I worked with at the time changed my perception.

The usage of a pole for dance purposes has some roots in exotic entertainment.  Nevertheless, one cannot dismiss the physical strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, balance and grace aspects of it in the context of fitness. Unfortunately, the sensual and provocative side of pole dance sometimes overshadow the skill factor.  As a photographer, that is where the challenge is: how do you create inspiring images fit for purpose that appropriately address the acrobatic & sensual elements?

My aim is to create photos that will project a 'wholesome' image of pole dance as a fun and energetic alternative to existing forms of exercise by shining the spotlight on the core strength, flexibility, coordination and body confidence aspects
